One of my issues with the first movie was that it jumped us right into the story after the apocalypse had already happened and didn't give us any backstory as to how we got to this point. When the second movie started, I was happy to see them traveling back in time to show us some of what happened when the world began to end, so we had more context before this movie flashes forward and starts to show us what happened right after the first movie ended. Bring on the monsters!
This movie introduces us to a new character, Emmet, played by Cillian Murphy. I like the nod to Murphy's other "end of the world" flick, "28 Days Later," in which he wandered the deserted streets of London looking for survivors of a plague that turns people into rage zombies. In this movie, the end of the world comes through creatures that traveled from outer space, but the movie doesn't linger too long on the "why" of the creatures, it just shows how people are surviving now, and how the creatures may not be the only things to fear in this brave new world.
When the world falls apart and you have to do whatever you can to survive, that can bring out the worst in people, and we certainly see that in this movie. We also get to see more of the creatures that are stalking our characters and making life more deadly for them. This sequel doesn't fall victim to the traps that other sequels do, like throwing more and bigger special effects at us thinking that will distract us from the lack of a plot, this movie has plenty of plot to spare, so much so that I can't wait for the next 2 movies in the franchise, which are already planned out for the coming years, a spin-off in 2024 and a part III which is tentatively set for release in 2025.
