October Horror Challenge 2022 #9: "Trilogy of Terror"

I remember the first time i watched this movie. I actually saw part 2 first when I was a teenager and it first aired back in the 90s. The creepy little Zuni doll haunted my dreams for months afterward. I remember making a plan for how I would escape my apartment and head for the police station in case the evil Zuni doll ever got into my apartment and came after me (and I wasn't a little kid either, I was 15) so it's safe to say that the story about the Zuni doll had a strong effect on me. I didn't see the original Trilogy of Terror until years later when I was in my late 20s and I remember that I didn't much like the first two stories in the trilogy, but the third story about the creepy evil Zuni doll was great. I wonder how well the movie will hold up to a second viewing?

This movie features a trilogy of tales starring he same actress, Karen Black, playing the main character in each story. The first story is about a repressed college professor who enters into a dangerous relationship with one of her students. The second story is about twin sisters who have a strange relationship. The third story is about a woman who is terrorized in her own home by a possessed Zuni fetish doll that comes to life and is intent on killing her.

The first time I saw this movie, I remember thinking that the first two stories were really boring and only the third one was good. All three stories are based on stories written by Richard Matheson. The first story is short and sweet, featuring a repressed college professor who experiences a passionate and dangerous relationship with one of her students. There's not much to say about the first story except that I saw the twist coming a mile away. I will say that it didn't bore me as much the second time around as it did the first time I watched it.

The second story is about twin sisters who have a very strained relationship. One is very prim and proper, the other is much more loose and outgoing, and the prim and proper one is convinced the other sister is evil. The prim one is Millicent and the loose one is Therese. We don't see much of Therese at first, we mostly hear from her sister how she is evil and committed to perverting everyone around her. it's not hard to guess the twist in this story either, but again, I didn't find it as boring the second time around. Maybe I've gotten more forgiving in my old age.

The third story is really the showpiece of the movie. It's the one that most people remember from the movie, mostly because of the creepy evil Zuni doll. As a friend of mine once put it, "that thing is the motherfucking devil." It runs around the apartment screaming and viciously attacking the woman with such rage, and it can't be stopped. It's so focused on the single-minded task of mutilating the woman that it gets under your skin and stays there. Karen Black gives a great performance here, especially at the end of the movie when she really scares the crap out of me. Overall, I enjoyed this movie more the second time around than I did the first time I watched it. It's available to stream on Amazon Prime and you should all check it out.
