October Horror Challenge 2022 #51: "Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker"

Apparently, this movie was released under the much less cool title "Night Warning." Who would choose that over an awesome title like "Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker"? That has to be one of the coolest titles I've ever heard. This movie was infamous at one time in the circles in which I run. One guy called it "exploitative garbage" and a few others railed against it for being mysoginistic and homophobic, and they all warned me not to watch it (which of course had the opposite effect of making me want to watch it immediately). I've waited a bit, but today seems like a good day to check it out finally.

This movie is about an aunt who has an unnatural obsession with her nephew, a high school basketball player. She has raised him from the age of three when his parents died in a horrible car crash which we get to witness in all its glory. Flash forward and the kid is seventeen, about to go away to college on a basketball scholarship, which makes his crazy aunt fly into a jealous rage. Soon her behavior gets more and more psychotic and dangerous. Will Billy be able to get away from his crazy aunt, or will her obsession with him spell death for Billy?

I can see why people said this movie is mysoginistic, Right from the beginning there are plenty of mysoginist comments from the cops. it soon becomes clear why people said it was homophobic as well, too, once the gay jokes and taunts start happening, and even crazy aunt Cheryl makes comments about homosexuals being sick (which it doesn't seem like she has much room to talk, SERIOUSLY).

Spoiler alert!

Susan Tyrell really gives it her all in this performance. She is wonderfully creepy in the role. She starts off just seeming a tad too involved in her nephew's life, and she slowly progresses throughout the course of the movie to absolutely apeshit insane by the end of the movie. She racks up an impressive body count before she is stopped, too. All the other reviews give away the fact that she's the killer, and it seems to be public knowledge at this point, so I probably didn't have to include a spoiler alert, but I don't want to totally ruin this movie for those who don't know what's going to happen. That's just how I roll. Overall this movie has a lot of 80s cheese going for it, and it's not perfect, but Susan Tyrell's performance saves it as she carries the entire movie home. If you're a fan of slashers and you're not easily offended by politically incorrect comments, you might want to give this movie a chance.
