October Horror Challenge 2022 #45: "Prey (2022)"

I first heard about this movie this summer right before it was released. Critics were talking about it and saying it was the best film in the Predator franchise since the first film, so that made me motivated to check it out since I hadn't really watched the Predator franchise much up to this point. The idea of a native warrior having to fight against one of the highly advanced and evolved alien predators is intriguing to me, so I was excited to check this movie out. Let's see how it holds up.

This movie is a prequel to the Predator franchise that takes place 300 years ago, where a comanche warrior fights one of the Predators in order to protect her people. She's not just hunting a predator, she also has to deal with French fur traders who are hunting the buffalo that her tribe relies on in order to survive. She is a primitive warrior with only the technology that was available in the 1700s, and here she is fighting a predator from space. it hardly seems like a fair fight.

Amber Midthunder gives a good performance here as the lead character. I like how they hired all actual indigenous actors to play the characters. The predator is a huge cheater. He turns himself invisible with his cloaking device every time he's fighting someone (cheater cheater pumpkin eater) so it's even less of a fair fight, plus it has all these highly evolved weapons and the people it's fighting have like, sticks and rocks. Way to beat your enemies, you took. There's some good gore here with the predator tearing people apart and cutting off their limbs. Even with sticks and rocks the people manage to get some good shots in and we see the predator bleeding its trademark glowing green blood (as one of the Comanche warriors says, "if it bleeds, we can kill it"). All in all this is a pretty good action horror flick. it's definitely better than "Predators" was and there's actually a likeable main character for us to root for in this movie. I say give it a shot.
