This movie caused quite a stir when it was released earlier this year. It's the story of a group of actors and amateur filmmakers who decide to try to make an X-rated movie behind the backs of their reclusive hosts at an old farmhouse. Plans go awry however when the hosts catch the filmmakers in the act, and soon they find themselves in a fight for their lives. I was excited to see this movie (or x-cited, as the case may be) because it got such good reviews from my friends in the horror community, and I was interested to see how it plays out. I'm a fan of sleazy 70s horror movies, and this movie, set in the 70s, gives me serious Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibes, with the secluded farmhouse way out in the boonies in Texas. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of my favorite movies, so that made me even more excited to see this one.
This movie gets right to the point with the graphic sex scenes fairly early on in the movie. They're shooting a porno but the cameraman has delusions of grandeur that he's going to make an artful film, so he talks about that a lot. The main character, Maxine, just wants to be a star, and she thinks this film she's making is going to make her a star. Her boyfriend just wants to make some money and doesn't really care who he has to exploit to do it. The situation at the farmhouse where they're staying is sketchy at best, with an elderly couple living in the farmhouse who ate both very frail and the old man carries around a shotgun with him everywhere he goes. he says it's not loaded but I find that assertion suspect and he doesn't seem happy about having the whole crew there, so I suspect he wouldn't be happy about the kind of movie they're planning to make.
None of the characters in this movie are especially likeable. Wayne, the guy who is making the movie, is a money-hungry sleazeball, RJ is the cameraman who imagines himself an artist, Lorraine is his girlfriend who helps with the production even though she's something of a prude, Bobby-Lynne is the sexpot star of the porno (played by Brittany Snow all grown up). They're just all kind of skeezy and gross and mean. Maxine played by Mia Goth is probably the most likeable of them all, so she's the one I was rooting for.
The gore is the star of the show here (TI West knows how to pour on the red stuff) and there are brutal stabbings, shootings, and axings galore, as well as a few other deaths I won't spoil for you here. Suffice it to say that the gorehounds will be happy. The music is pretty good too and I wouldn't mind getting the soundtrack to this movie. Overall, this is a nasty little enjoyable flick and I'm glad I checked it out.
