Rob Zombie is a very polarizing filmmaker. You seem to either love him or hate him, and even those who love him seem to hate some of his movies. Lords of Salem in particular seems to be almost universally hated, even though I really liked it. in fact, I've liked all of his movies except for Halloween 2, and I've been meaning to watch that one again in case the director's cut is better. I didn't understand when I heard he was going to be directing this movie, though, because The Munsters was a campy comedy show and I just didn't see any connection between the sadistic, nasty horror Zombie was known for and something as seemingly wholesome as The Munsters. I was curious enough to give it a watch though, so we shall see what I think of it.
In this version of The Munsters, Shari Moon Zombie plays Lily Munster, a lovelorn vampire who is searching for the ghoul of her dreams and not having much luck in the dating department. that is until she meets Herman Munster, a 7 foot tall green experiment gone wrong who ended up as a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. Lily falls head over heels for Herman and he is equally smitten with her, but her father doesn't approve of this match as he has other plans for Lily's love life. Are the two lovebirds destined to be together or will her father have his way in tearing the two apart?
This movie is really campy and silly. It's not at all like Zombie's other movies, there's no gore to speak of and it definitely captures the spirit of retro silliness that you'd expect to find in any reboot of the Munsters worth its salt. There's not much to say about this movie. It honestly feels like a setup for a new Munsters series that could be coming to Netflix sometime in the near future, and that would work to tie up the many plot threads that are sort of left hanging in this movie, If you're a fan of the original show or you're looking to introduce some kiddos to horror without too much gore and unleasantness, you should check this one out.
