And now we move on to the third movie in the Fear Street trilogy, this one set in 1666. Before you ask, no, I'm sure it isn''t totally accurate to the time period in which it's set, but it does seem to try its best, so that's enough for me. I was eager to finally check this one out and get to the bottom of the story and find out what Sarah the witch REALLY did all those years ago that set in motion a curse that has loomed over the town for years since.
Going back to 1666, we finally find ourselves back at the beginning of the curse and all the evil that has haunted the town of Shadyside for generations. Back in colonial times, we meet Sarah Fier, who lives with her father and brother in a puritan settlement. Soon an evil seems to be taking over the settlement, their pastor starts acting strange, their water supply is poisoned, and eventually everything culminates in a horrible act of violence committed by the pastor. The town soon decides that witches are to blame, and Sarah and her friend Hannah (the pastor's daughter) are offered up as suspects. Unfortunately, back in puritan times, once you were accused of being a witch it was pretty much accepted as truth, so the town turns on Sarah and it's up to her to figure out a way to save herself and her friends and her townspeople before it's too late.
Maybe it's because I would definitely have been hanged as a witch back in puritan times, but stories about the puritan era always piss me off. It's so not fair how anyone who was different was ostracized, and people who sought out natural remedies were branded as witches and witches were tortured into confessing then put to death. Something told me that when we finally heard Sarah Fier's story, we would find that she wasn't guilty of what she was accused of doing or that there was a lot more to the story, and when we heard what happened to her and how she was treated by the people in her town, I almost wouldn't have bllamed her if she DID turn to witchcraft to get back at those awful people.
This story does two things. Well, three things. It pisses me off, one, but two, it finally tells us the truth of what happened back in Sarah Fier's day, and three, it finally wraps up the slasher throwback story that started with "Fear Street Part 1: 1994." It manages to be a pretty satisfying conclusion in the end, too, so I was happy with how it ended. I remember reading the Fear Street novels back in the day, and a lot of them dealt with the curse of Fear Street, but I don't remember them ever coming to such a satisfying conclusion. I like how these movies took the original Fear Street stories and built on them, taking what feels like the gore of every 90s slasher combined and dumping it all into one fllashy slashy good time. I was a little annoyed with the first movie, and I wasnt sure about the second, but I LOVED the third. See it. It's full of gore and evil people and generational curses, and you have to watch the whole trilogy to get there, but when you finally do, it's a gloriously bloody good time.
