October Horror Challenge 2019 #36: "The Crawling Eye"

This movie has a great poster, doesn't it? I remember seeing it when I was a kid and wanting to see the movie based just on this poster. Plus eyes are just icky. They've always kind of sleeved me out, probably because I watched "X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes" and was scarred for life seeing someone RIP their own eyes out (eeeewwww).

This movie is about a series of strange deaths and weird happenings that lead some men (a newspaper reporter and a guy who works for the U.N.) to believe there's a monster on the loose, but they want to collect more evidence to be sure. There are high radiation levels, and a pair of sisters who are traveling in the area are worried because one of the sisters has telepathic powers, and she senses that something horrible is going on. It turns out that they're all right, of course, and some evil aliens are living in the mountains and killing everyone in a fiendish plot to take over the world or something.

People in the 50s and 60s were afraid that aliens were going to kill us all (either that or the russains) so there are a ton of alien invasion movies from around that time. We're not really as concerned with aliens these days, but with environmental disasters happening so often, the idea that something in nature is going to kill us all still feels timely. It's too bad there's very little "crawling eye" killing going on in this movie. I think the filmmakers knew that was their coolest effect, so they exploited it in the advertising. As you can probably tell, this movie isn't very good, but it's an ok way to kill an hour and a half if you want to catch a cheesy alien invasion flick.
