2020 October Horror Challenge #40: "The Beginning of the End (MST3K)"

Ok, not to be rude or anything,  but how do you "accidentally" create a bunch of giant grasshoppers? This movie is about a scientist who manages to do just that, and I'm still kinda trying to wrap my head around how that even happens. Grasshoppers can be really disgusting. If you've ever read the Little House on the Prairie books, there's a point where their farm gets infested with graashoppers, and they get in all the food and cover the walls of the house, and it's nasty. So they don't even have to be giant to be scary obviously,  but at one point in movie history, filmmakers were obsessed with giant animals and insects, so they had to get around to Grasshoppers eventually. The movie "Them" about giant ants is actually pretty good, but sometimes me this movie will be less good, especially since all I've heard is people making fun of it ever since I was a kid.

There's not much to the plot. Eww, giant Grasshoppers,  let's try to stop them. Luckily, the MST3K crew snd their snide remarks save us all from dying of boredom. The problem is, this movie is so dull and plodding that it's still really boring even with the funny commentary. "Manos the Hands of Fate" is the same way, it's so bad, no amount of sarcasm can save it. Seriously,  only two things actually happen in the movie. A giant grasshopper attacks people at the beginning and the end, then the rest of the movie is scenes of scientists talking about the grasshoppers.

I guess the movie only had enough of a budget to show the creepy crawlies twice, but watching scientists arguing makes for a really boring movie. Sometimes older black and white horror movies can surprise you with their effectiveness,  but this is definitely not one of those times. Sorry folks. The only thing that could improve this movie is a giant can of Raid.

  1. Yes, I think I would have stabbed my eyes out watching this without the comments from the MST3K crew... it was awful and such a dumb premise.
