2020 October Horror Challenge #26: "Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter"

It's kinda hard to believe that anyone thought this was ever going to be the last Friday the 13th movie. They made so much money that it just made sense for the studio to keep churning them out again and again. Judging by the movie posters, they at least wanted audiences to think this was going to be the last of these movies. Jason's final showdown. Instead of just showing scenes from the last sequel to help viewers catch up to the story, we get to see a montage with scenes from the first three movies. It works better than the other montages for me, because it's set in the framework of someone sitting around a campfire telling the story of Jason's killings, which sets up the whole series as a campfire story told to scare little kids (and adults!) That's essentially what these movies are, as Jason's story is part of our country's folklore now after all these years, so it's cool to see the filmmakers acknowledge this.

So in this sequel, there are some typical dumb teens gathered to party in the woods who will serve as easy prey for the homicidal Jason. The neighboring house has a teenage girl living with her little brother and she's taking care of him for the weekend. There's also a mysterious guy lurking around trying to poke into the details of the Jason legend. He seems pretty obsessed with getting to the bottom of the killings. Of course Jason doesn't like being scrutinized, so he goes after this guy. Can the girl and her little brother figure out a way to stop Jason, or will they die too?

I don't know if it's because they thought this would be the last Friday the 13th movie so they put more work into it or what, but this is a pretty solid movie. It has a lot more attention paid to the ot than some of the other sequels, and there's more work put into creating the characters and crafting their motivations. Because of this, there's actually more than one character I  can actually stand. I even genuinely like at least three of them. One guy is trying to avenge the death of his sister, and the little boy and his sister are interesting characters too. I actually wanted to see them survive and defeat Jason in the end.

I don't want to give away the ending of this movie, but I think it would be cool if they did a "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later" style Friday the 13th movie where they revisit the survivor of this sequel and match them up against Jason for one final battle. I bet that would be fun. As for this movie, it has cool kills and a good story and halfway decent characters,  so I dig it.
