2020 October Horror Challenge #21: "The Bat(1959)"

I swear I've seen this movie before,  but I can't recollect anything about it. I don't know if I'm just getting old or I really haven't seen this movie before, but either way, it looks like it will be fun to check out. I love Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead, so I should enjoy this movie.

Vincent Price is a lot less cruel in this movie. He plays a doctor taking a secluded hunting trip in the woods with a wealthy patient of his. It turns out the wealthy guy recently embezzled a million dollars from his bank, and we soon discover that the doctor has plans to kill him for his money. People are jerks in this movie. Anyway, while this little drama is playing out, people are dying in town, victims of a killer the  press calls "The Bat." All the killer's victims have their throats ripped out, and one of his victims described him as not having a face right before she died. Yikes! Agnes Moorehead plays a writer who specializes in horror mystery novels, and she becomes obsessed with the news stories about the whole murder/embezzlement plot. No one knows about the involvement of the doctor, and no one can find the embezzled money either. Our writer friend just happens to be renting a house in town that might be haunted, but she claims not to be afraid of ghosts (I guess I can't blame her, with all the human monsters running around in this movie). She's also fascinated by the Bat killer guy, so she keeps butting into the case (because she's a dumbass who's never seen a horror movie in her life). It turns out the house she is renting was owned by the crazy rich embezzler guy, which might put her in danger, because in this movie, everyone is a lying cheat or a murderer.

The scenes at the beginning of the movie where a strange, faceless man is trying to get into the house in the middle of a rainstorm are actually pretty effective. Once the movie gets going, the writer's maid has been bitten by a bat that might be rabid, so they seek treatment from a doctor who just happens to be the killer doctor from the beginning of the movie. Whoops. Of course, he's probably more interested in getting into her house and searching for the embezzled money.

So our weiter is living in a house that might be haunted, writing a novel based off the story of the killings done by "The Bat," and she has Doctor Creepy trying to break into her house so he can steal some already stolen money. Talk about bad luck. Then the movie plods along, and maybe the doctor isn't the killer, or isn't the only killer at least, but by this point I had a hard time caring. The characters are all dipshits or evil or hiding something, and I couldn't really root for them, so I  mostly just wanted the movie to end. I was hoping this movie would be fun, but it drags way too much in between a few good scenes, and there are better ways to spend your time.
