October Horror Challenge 2023 #67: "Child's Play (2019)"

When i heard that they were remaking the movie "Child's Play," i had mixed feelings about it. I tend to like remakes better than a lot of horror fans do, but for me, remakes that simply follow the original movie scene by scene are unnecessary. We already have the original movie, we don’t need a copy of it. And this movie was supposed to revamp the whole movie, so it wasn't going to try and be a pale carbon copy of the original, which made me more interested in seeing it. Horror fans seem to dislike this movie, but horror fans are very hard to please, so that didn't necessarily sway me from wanting to see this movie. Seeing what they did with Chucky, making him look like a miniature Hollister model instead of a doll made me not really want to see the movie, though, so I waited four years after its release to finally watch it. Let's see what I think of this movie.

A worker in a toy factory gets his own kind of revenge by messing with one of the dolls he makes, and then through a twist of fate the doll ends up in the hands of a single mother trying to find the perfect birthday gift for her son, Andy. Now Andy is a little old for dolls, but in this movie the doll isn't just a toy, it's a state of the art computer generated little robot that connects with your other smart devices on your home and basically plugs into the technology and starts to run your life. The Buddi doll even imprints on your kid and lives to serve as your kid's best friend. what could possibly go wrong with that? A lot, it turns out, as the creepy little thing imprints on Andy and starts wreaking bloody havoc. Will Andy and his friends be able to stop the doll in time? Or will it continue its reign of terror?

Chucky's makeover notwithstanding, i ended up enjoying this movie a lot. The story of how Chucky became evil is different in this version of the movie, and i think I liked it better this way. I'm an old fuddy-duddy when it comes to technology, so movies like this don't have to try too hard to scare me. i already find the premise terrifying. People are too reliant these days on technology, with smart watches and smart houses and smart cars that drive themselves. Haven't they seen "2001: A Space Odyssey"? How did that work out once the machines gained too much power? This Chucky is creepy as he starts his bloody rampage in the name of helping his friend Andy. There'ssome good gore here, and a warning about becoming too reliant on technology, and for that alone i liked this movie a lot. If you're going to remake something, make it new, and they did.
