October Horror Challenge 2023 #62: "Goosebumps"

i know ive watched this movie before, but it's beenso long that i don't remember anything about it. When I was a kid, the Goosebumps books were the hot new thing and everyone was reading them. They were a kind of horror-lite, an intro to horror for kids. I even liked these books more than the Fear Street series by the same author, R.L. Stine. so i was excited to watch this movie today.

This movie stars Jack Black as the author R.L. Stine. He's a little eccentric and overprotective of his teenage daughter, Hannah, played by Odeya Rush. When a new neighbor moves in next door, Zach, played by Dylan Minnette, he becomes infatuated with Hannah, much to her father's chagrin. one night when Zach hears screaming and thinks Hannah is in trouble, he breaks into her house trying to save her, and he discovers that R.L Stine's books hold a deadly secret: if you open one of the books, the monsters inside the book jump into our world and start wreaking havoc. This complicates things for our heroes, as they have to figure out how to get the monsters back in the books before they destroy the town.

I'm glad R.L Stine's books don't really come to life, because that would be creepy. Especiallythe book about the evil ventriloquist dummy and the book about the evil lawn gnomes, both of which come to life in this movie. I still remember the first R.L Stine Goosebumps book that came out, called "Welcome to Dead House," and how i waited impatiently for the library to get it so i could check it out and read it.This is what the cover looked like:

The book was about a family that moves to a new town only to discover that it's inhabited by the living dead. They don't make an appearance in this movie, but they were really cool when I was eleven years old and not yet allowed to read Stephen King books. This movie is a lot of fun. I love when Jack Black as R.L Stine rants about how he's sold more books than Stephen King. Overall, this is a good movie and I promise to remember it this time.
