This movie has Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, AND Vincent Price in it! That's like the trifecta of classic horror movie royalty all there in one film. Gotta love the classics. Between the three of them they've made half a hundred great horror flicks, and it's always nice seeing their names on a movie i'm going to watch. I've known the title of this movie for years, though ive never seen it before and i didn't even know what it was about (it has Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and Vincent Price in it, who CARES what it'sabout, it's bound to be great). I finally sat down to watch this movie today, and here's what I thought.
This movie has a thousand different plot threads thrown into one. Ok, ok, it's just three plots, but it's still confusing. So first off, Christopher Lee plays the head of British intelligence who are busy right now tracking a murderer. Vincent Price plays a deranged doctor who steals body parts from his victims in order to conduct his grotesque experiments. Peter Cushing plays a facist leader who is nudging all the characters along like pieces on a chess board in some maniacal game. Another actor, who has to try and wrest the screen away from those three greats, is named Alfred Marks, and he plays the head detective on scene trying to solve this mess of a case. Will all of these plot threads eventually come together or will we be left in the dark?
Vincent Price is genuinely creepy in this movie. He plays a mad doctor who performs horrifying experiments on people. I've been watching him in movies since I was a kid, but I never knew he could be this batshit crazy scary like he is in this movie and one I saw last year that I can't remember the name of now, but he played an ex actor who was going around killing critics in horrible ways. Now in this movie he's back to torturing and killing people again. Shame on you, Vincent Price. Don't you know murder is wrong? Wikipedia calls this movie "disjointed," and that it very much is, but all three of the plots are interesting, and they all eventually do come together in the end. This is a clever little movie that was largely ignored upon its release, but it has since gained a cult following, and that cult status is definitely well earned..You should give this movie a watch sometime. It's well worth seeing.
