2011 October Horror Movie Challenge Movie 16: Hellraiser IV: Bloodline
I make jokes all the time about movie sequels, saying that when the filmmakers run out of ideas, they can just set the sequel in space. apparently, whoever made this movie isn't in on the joke, as they thought it would be a good idea to actually set this sequel in space. As you can imagine, the results are pretty hilarious. A descendent of the man who first made the puzzle box that opens the portal to hell and summons Pinhead and his demons decides to try and destroy the portal once and for all (why did this need to be set in space again? Oh well, the giant puzzle box spaceship is kind of cool).
This movie goes back to the past, where we meet the original creator of the puzzle box, and it's hilarious because he's supposed to live in ancient France, but no one in the movie speaks French or even has a French accent. Way to go, filmmakers. Of course, the Hellraiser sequels usually have pretty cool special effects even when their plots leave much to be desired, and this one is no exception. People get ripped apart, skinned, sucked into hell and spit back out, and there are some nasty images of worms invading food that might put you off eating for awhile. We follow the "bloodline" of the puzzle box creators into the present, where a descendent of the bloodline has visions of evil and Pinhead decides to kidnap his young son in order to lure him to hell. Meanwhile, back on the spaceship, the guy who's telling us this story enlists the help of a woman who inexplicably believes him and gets her to help him carry out his plan to stop Pinhead (which we all know must not have been a very good plan since there are four more movies after this one). Yeah, it's ridiculous, but it's kind of fun too, so it's worth a watch if you're a fan of the series like I am.
