2011 October Horror Movie Challenge Movie 12: Curtains
This is one of those movies that horror fans gush about a lot. It's a slasher from the 80s that hasn't gotten a "good" DVD release yet, so you can only find it in those skeezy looking 4 movie packs, and a lot of people say it deserves better than that. I watched this for the first time today, and I can honestly say this is one movie that lives up to its immense hype.
Right from the beginning the movie is dreamlike and it's hard to tell what's real and what's not, who is acting and who isn't. A famous (maybe I should say "infamous") director is making a much hyped film and he invites six actresses to his remote cabin on a winter weekend for a chance to audition for the part (sure, nothing sounds off about that, let's go!) Of course nothing is as it seems and someone seems to want the part badly enough to kill for it.
Samantha Eggar is really creepy in this movie. I expected her to fly into a rage and butcher everyone onscreen at any minute. There are some nightmares thrown into the mix, and everyone seems to walk around in a trancelike state and see things that may or may not really be there, so it's hard to tell who is crazy (I entertained thoughts that they might all be crazy and killing each other) and the effect is unsettling. The snowy setting is remote and creepy, and when the group gets snowed in, there's no chance to escape. I loved the setting, the acting was great, the premise was creepy (who isn't afraid to audition with a bunch of other actors who want a part as badly as you do and find out that they might be willing to kill to get it?) I pretty much loved everything about this movie and it is now one of my favorites.
