2011 October Horror Movie Challenge Movie 15: Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth

Hellraiser III gets a lot of crap for being a bad movie, and I don't really know why. sure, it's cheesy and not as good as the original, but did you expect it to be? For the third installment in a horror franchise, I think it's a lot better than it has any right to be. All the Hellraiser sequels are worth watching. They range in quality from pretty good, like this one, to pretty terrible, like, oh say, the fourth one, but they all have some good gore, creepy special effects, and enough going for them to make them enjoyable.

In this movie, an investigative reporter is following a series of mysterious deaths that surround the local underground scene and one seedy nightclub in particular. The guy who runs the nightclub is a typical Hellraiser villain, a mental genius who thinks it would be a good idea to play with a puzzle box that opens a portal to hell (hey, sounds like fun to me!) Pinhead and his minions start sucking people into hell and turning them into icky demonic things, and Joey, the reporter, seeks out the man who created Pinhead in order to figure out how to stop him. Oh, she also has visions of her father who died in Vietnam without ever getting to meet his daughter (wonder if Pinhead will use these visions to get at Joey?)

It's not rocket science, but some of the demons are really cool (check out what Pinhead does to a cameraman). Worth a watch if you're a fan of the first two movies. Even if you think it sucks, you might have fun watching it anyway.
