October Horror Challenge 2019 #52: "Blood Waters of Doctor Z"
It must be rough being a mad scientist. Most of these evil doctor movies start because some doctor has a crazy idea, and instead of that idea becoming an important advancement in science and going down in history, that doctor is ostracized from the scientific community and he goes to live in some secret lair and continues his experiments, eventually creating some horrible creature that gets loose and kills a bunch of people.
In this movie the mad scientist is known as Doctor Z, and he does crazy experiments on fish, eventually creating a serum that can turn a person into a big walking catfish creature. You guessed it, he uses the serum on himself, turns himself into a monster, and goes on a killing spree. That's one way to get back at people who piss you off, I guess. Soon he's looking for a mate, and the police are trying to catch him, and it's all a big mess.
The creature effects are really terrible, even for a low-budget movie. They could have kept the creature in the shadows and made it more mysterious, but instead we get tons of close up shots of what looks like a guy in a brown snowsuit covered in rubber cement and wearing a mask fashioned from trash bags glued to a rubbermaid trash can. Not a good look, movie.
So here's the thing. I guess I want the doctor to be stopped, as he's a nut and he's using his discovery to hurt people, but I don't like the "good guys" in this movie very much either. They're all assholes and all the bad stuff in the movie is partly the fault of the other scientists who just pushed Doctor Z away instead of recognizing how dangerous his ideas were and trying to stop him before he killed a zillion people. With acting that's not the best, annoying characters, and bad special effects, this movie isn't even the fun kind of bad, it's just annoying.
