October Horror Challenge 2019 #66: "The Amazing Transparent Man"
I really hate it when mad scientists go all evil and do horrible things that wind up getting a ton of people killed. Jerks. And they're always willing to test their new invention out on human beings, without giving thought to all the destruction they might cause. Didn't the mad doctor in this movie ever read "The Invisible Man"? It's clearly not a good idea to turn someone invisible. They'll likely go insane.
This movie is about a convict who escapes from prison aided by a doctor who has a lab in a secluded house in the country where he and another scientist have created a machine that can turn a man invisible. They plan to use the convict to commit robberies while he is invisible. I don't really see how this will work, because it's not like the cops won't notice money or stolen crap floating away being carried by an invisible man, but whatever, nobody asked me.
None of the characters in this movie are very likable. The mad scientist who invented the machine is probably the most sympathetic. He's only helping the mad doctor because he wants his family to be safe. Everyone else seems to be out for themselves and ready to double cross and stab each other in the back to get what they want. This is all assuming the plan goes well and the machine doesn't kill the guy or turn him crazy, and assuming he gets away with the robberies and doesn't get caught. These nitwits are assuming a lot of things will go well when there's no guarantee of that.
I will say though that the characters are fleshed out better than characters in these types of movies have any right to be. Their scheme is hare brained, but they have actual personalities and character development. Plus I really hate the mad doctor guy, so I enjoyed seeing him get knocked around in one of the scenes after we'd seen him bully everyone else for the rest of the movie.
Of course, the doctor's plan has huge flaws that no one foresaw coming (because they're idiots) and shit gets real as the whole plan falls apart. I'm kinda surprised the plan works for as long as it does, actually. Gotta love when criminals start scrambling to figure out how to save themselves. This movie is entertaining, moreso than I thought it would be, so I'm glad I checked it out.
