The poster for this movie looks really cool, so I was kind of excited to check it out. When it started playing and I saw that it was from Asylum, though, I was...slightly less enthused. Asylum is known for putting out low-budget RIP offs of well known films (Transmorphers instead of Transformers, for example) and they make a lot of bad movies. I have enjoyed some of their stuff, though (Paranormal Entity, their knockoff of Paranormal Activity, is actually pretty good) so I was hopeful.
This movie is about a flight from Los Angels to New York that experiences a bad storm, then stranger things start happening. A passenger swears he sees a ghost, and gradually the other passengers start seeing even scarier things. Soon everyone is terrified, and they start trying to figure out the source of the horrifying apparitions before it's too late.
The acting in this movie is actually pretty good, especially for a low budget horror flick. Nothing Oscar worthy, but I was able to connect with several of the characters, and I was rooting for them to figure out the ghostly events before they all got themselves killed.
I liked the special effects too. The ghosts and other apparitions were creepy, plus having the characters 30,000 feet in the air while all the creepy spirits keep showing up gives the events much more a sense of urgency. Not only are the ghosts trying to kill them, but they could crash at any time and die a fiery death. Talk about terrifying.
The movie isn't perfect, of course. There are about a million breaches in protocol here, things that would never have been allowed in a million years by the Air Marshall or the pilot. There's some factual goods too, like how if a plane goes through a storm like this the thunder isn't audible in the plane, but honestly, I'm glad they ignored that, because the constant sound of thunder adds to the creepiness of the atmosphere. No, the movie isn't perfect, but it was scary and entertaining, and I had a lot of fun watching it.
