October Horror Challenge 2018 #20: "Voodoo Man"
It's really a shame that Bela Lugosi was in so many bad horror movies, because he was a good actor with a great stage presence, and he manages to inject some class even into cheesy fare like this. White Zombie wasn't bad, and it did remind me a bit of this movie, but sadly, this movie never manages to be as good as this one.
This movie is about a doctor whose wife died many years ago, but he's obsessed with bringing her back to life, so he turns mad scientist/shaman and reanimated her body, but she doesn't have a soul, so she wanders around as if in a trance, so he keeps luring women into the woods, kidnapping them, and trying to transfer their souls into his wife's body, but it never works and just turns the girls into trance/zombies too.
Lugosi plays the voodoo priest who tries to transfer the women's souls into the dead wife's body. It's actually a sad story, the poor man grieving and wanting to be with his wife again, not caring who he has to hurt in the process. It's too bad that the movie mostly focuses on main characters who aren't as interesting, instead of spending more time examining the characters that are more compelling. This movie isn't horrible, but it is boring, and that makes me sad, because it could have been better.
