2015 October Horror Challenge #51 "Children of the Corn: Genesis"
Creepy religious people are scary. Creepy little evil kids are scary. So the "Children of the Corn" movies, combining both creepy religious people and creepy religious rituals with creepy evil little children, should be easy to pull off and maje into good little scary movies, right? That's what I've always thought, and that's what keeps me watching these movies, hoping they will be good, though they usually aren't. Even though this movie only got like one or two stars from most every reviewer, I gave it a chance because the idea is a good one, so I always hold out hope that the movies will be good, too.
The opening sequence of the movie is good. The special effecys arent great, abd im pretty sure a few things that happened defied the laws of physics and gravity, bit the idea was good enough for me to ignorr that. A soldier returns home from vietnam to find all the adults in his hometown slaughtered by creepy little kids. Whats not to like? I also really liked the married couple in this movie, the main characters. They seemed sweet and in love, and yeah they do some stupid stuff, but they were stranded in the desert when their car broke down, so they didn't have much of a choice.
Billy Drago, who is the only well known actor I recognize in this movie, and he can go either way, being a over-the-top to the point of being ridiculous, or a little eccentric but not terrible in his performance, and in this movie he leans toward the second option, being really weird but not that bad. His quirkiness fit his character. Once it becomes clearer what's going on, and the creepiness factor rises, I actually think he does a pretty good job with his character.
In case you couldn't tell, I wound up liking this movie. Among other horror movies, it doesn't stand out as anything special, but among the other "Children of the Corn" movies, it's a fucking masterpiece. There's some well-placed gire, creepy religious rituals, evil children, and some performances that weren't half bad, and it ended up being an ok way to spend an hour and a half.
