Village of the Damned (1960) (movie #27)
I've never seen this movie, but I've always liked the remake, so I was glad to have a chance to sit down and watch the original. I have to say, the most effective scenes are the early ones, where the town of Midwich suddenly falls asleep for several hours and everyone who tries to enter the town falls asleep as well. These scenes are actually creepy. Later, when all the women of the town discover that they're pregnant, and soon give birth to creepy little blond children who all look the same, these scenes are effective as well. Once the children start to talk, though, it all falls apart. Sorry, but the kids in the original don't sound sinister at all, especially not compared with the ones from the remake. The dialogue here leaves a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, the human drama is compelling as it plays out (how would you feel if you found out your child was evil? Even if you'd suspected it in the past, it's still a hard thing to swallow). The mothers and fathers in the town make the rest of this movie work, even when it gets a little silly. Overall I enjoyed this movie (though the remake is better, I don't care what anyone says).
